Adjusting to Dentures and Its Types

September 30, 2019

Missing teeth can make you appear unattractive. Not only that, but missing teeth can also lead to several dental issues such as bone loss in the jaw, shifting of the teeth, and more. However, you won’t have to worry about experiencing these things with dentures. Dentures are removable, prosthetic devices designed for replacing the missing teeth. Dentures are available in two types – complete and partial dentures.

Two types of dentures

Complete dentures are used when all the teeth in the dental arches are missing. Complete dentures can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are ready for placement in the mouth in about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth have been removed. While immediate dentures are made in advance and are placed immediately after the teeth have been removed.

A partial denture, on the other hand, consists of replacement teeth that are attached to a metal framework. Partial dentures are used when there are remaining natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw.

Eating with dentures

Eating with new dentures may be a bit challenging, but with frequent practice, they can get accustomed to it in no time. Although dentures may look natural, they do not feel exactly the same as natural teeth do. To get used to this new denture, they must start with soft food cut into small pieces by chewing it slowly using both sides of the mouth. Over time, they will be accustomed to their new dentures until they return to their normal diet gradually. However, they must be careful with hot or hard foods and sharp-edged bones or shells because it can cause damage to their dentures. And, they should also avoid extremely sticky or hard foods. Chewing of gum while wearing dentures and using toothpick should also be avoided.

Speaking with dentures

After getting dentures, they may experience difficulty in pronouncing certain words at first. With constant practice and with time, they can become accustomed to speaking properly with dentures. If they experience any problems with their dentures such as slipping or clicking, they must consult the dentist or prosthodontist to make necessary adjustments with their dentures.

I’ve been going to Wauwatosa Dental Arts for over 2 years now. When you first walk in it’s very much an at-home feel; it doesn’t feel like a corporate dental building with everyone in white coats or typical medical office decor. I’m greeted right away and I never have to wait. I get the same dental hygienist every time, and that also makes for a very personable experience. It doesn’t feel like I’m just a number there. I don’t plan to stop going here anytime soon, even when my husband and I move out of tosa I will still make the drive. Everyone is very professional and the office is very clean.

Dental arts association in tosa is amazing. Their hygienist Jeanie is the best! Friendly, easy to talk to extremely knowledgeable. She had to do a deep cleaning on my teeth and gums. I’ve never felt this type of relief from a hygienist in a long time. I would highly recommend them 10 out of 10.
